September - Holland For five days we stayed in a small picturesque hotel in Delft, from where we drove daily to see some of the best Art that the Netherlands could offer. We visited the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (plus a canal cruise!) Further afield we toured the Palace of Het Loo, built in 1685 as a country retreat for William III and his wife, Mary Stuart, and more recently used by Wilhelmina, with nearby the Kroller-Muller Museum which contains over 200 van Goghs. We saw Delft Pottery, Paintings by Masters, Sculptures, the Queen opening Parliament (theirs, not ours!), tryptichs, dyptichs, the Girl with the Pearl Earring, some girls without so much as a pearl earring, and on our homeward journey visited St. Bavos Cathedral in Ghent to see the 24-panel altarpiece ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ painted by the brothers Hubert and Jan van Eyck – a busy few days but very rewarding!

Past Theatre and Other Vists

September 2011 - Buckingham Palace - the visit was attended by 30 members and we were able to see the wedding dres and the Faberge display as well as many of the state rooms.
27th October 2011 - The TOURING OPERA at GLYNDEBOURNE treated us to an one of the best and most moving performances I have seen of Puccini’s La Boheme, with imaginative scenery, great acting between the numerous members of the cast, beautiful music, sublime young voices, and tears before bedtime – what more could one ask of an Opera.
